In the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games, United States swimmer Michael Phelps is attempting to accomplish the impossible. He's trying to beat Mark Spitz's record of 7 gold medals in one game, with his own record 8 medals. At the Athens 2004 games, he was able to win 6 gold and 2 bronze. So far, Phelps has competed in two medal rounds, winning both with a gold. Experts say that the next 400 meter medley will be the toughest for Phelps in his quest for gold.
Phelps exploded onto the field on the first day of the games, shattering his old world record in just the preliminary rounds. On day 3 of the games, Phelps almost lost all hopes of getting the destined 8 medals because of the French, in a dramatic race to the finish in the 400-free relay, with the United States finishing at 3:08.24. The French placed second, trailing the United States by .08 of a second. Australia earned bronze with a time of 3:09.91. Phelps has already qualified for the 200 Meter free finals, and many agree that he is an unstoppable force in the water.
Will Michael Phelps be able to accomplish his amazing quest? If he does, he will be forever cast into the halls of fame for the Olympics as the only person to get 8 gold medals in a single game. He hopes to at least accomplish a career high of 10 gold medals by the end of these games. He also hopes to attend the 2012 games before he retires.
